Michel Lynch 2002

May 14th, 2006

To be honest, I’m yet to develop an appreciation for Bordeaux wines. Michel Lynch is a wine from the Medoc, a very “clean” and drinkable Cabernet Merlot. Descent nose and a fruity taste. A bit dry, but not too much, and enjoyed it overall. Would drink again. Tried it with several cheeses, went very well with Cooleeney, a soft Irish cheese.

Price: €10.95
Score: 7/10

Gran Sangre de Toro - Reserva 2001

May 14th, 2006

I’m a big fan of Spanish wines, so it’s no wonder I’m starting this diary with a nice one from Torres, Catalunya.

Gran Sangre de Toro is a mix of Garnacha, Cariñena and Syrah with a good balance of oakiness. It reminds me of good Riojas more than any other Torres wine I’ve tried so far. Beautiful nose, easy going, very nice aftertaste. Spicy blackberries. Had it without food, but I can see it going very well with some stronger meat dishes (beef, lamb). I think it would be perfect with those Spanish lamb stuffed peppers.

Definitely worth drinking again. Consider having for entertaining guests.

Producer: Torres, Miguel is a world famous company among the stars of the wine world. Makes most of the best Penedes wines; flagship for all Spain.
Price: €11.95
Score: 9/10

Rating Wines

May 14th, 2006

I will be rating each wine with a score from 1 to 10, 10 being the best. I know this scale is not used much in wine rating, but it is the one that is most useful and closest to me. The rating will include the wine as a whole, which means that only the perfect wines should get a 10. If there’s anything I don’t like about the wine, the score will be lower and I will explain the reason. Of course, as the time goes by I might change the scale if I feel the current one is not enough.

Welcome to my Wine Diary

May 14th, 2006

Hello and welcome to my wine diary!

After having been exploring the world of wine quite chaotically for five years, I recently completed a “Wine Appreciation” course which opened my eyes, my taste buds and created a thirst for wine knowledge and of course, intensified my thirst for wine. I am now building my knowledge by reading several books on wine, following a couple of nice blogs and consulting the net for nearly every wine I drink, trying to figure out what others think of it and why and compare it to my thoughts. Since I never really took any notes on the wines I tasted (quite a shame actually), I decided to start doing it now, so here it is, in a form of a blog. I’m hoping that the blog will generate some feedback which will correct me where I’m wrong.

To summarize, this diary will be a place for me as a relative wine amateur, but still a big wine lover, to post my thoughts on wines I drink. I want to be able to read a post a few months after writing it and know straight away if I liked the wine or not, and why. The wines I buy and will be writing about are in the mid low range of prices (never over 20 euros), so don’t expect to see any rare or fancy wines here! This might change over time!

So, on with the show. Open your taste buds and feel free to post any comments you may have. Cheers!
